Description:
Designed to work with the most important express trains, the BR Class 52 locomotives spent their glory years traveling through the Western Region of the British Railways network, and today they continue to delight visitors to historical museum railways. In 1955, a plan to modernize the British Railways network was published. This plan required all regions to gradually withdraw steam locomotives from operation in order to switch to more modern diesel traction. The main part of the railway network was focused on the use of diesel-electric drive, and only the Western region took a different approach, seriously interested in the idea of operating a hydraulic transmission. In the following years, several more projects were developed for various tasks, but none of them was as amazing as the Western, the first of which rolled off the assembly line in the early 1960s. In accordance with German diesel-hydraulic technology, the Westerns were equipped with two engines, the joint operation of which made it possible to achieve a higher thrust force than on earlier locomotives. The Class 52 is capable of reaching speeds of 90 mph (and according to unofficial data — up to 110 mph). It was they who set the standards for the operation of express trains on the GWR line in the 1960s and 70s, proving the effectiveness of diesel-hydraulic traction. Anyway, in the region, these locomotives were said goodbye in 1977, when they were replaced by the new BR Class 50 and the flagship HST high-speed trains for British Rail. A total of 74 locomotives were produced, only 7 of which were preserved, and some of them are even in working condition, and now the West Somerset Railway route has become their home.
