New campaign map:
The Western Mediterranean is presented in more detail than on the ROME II map, and players can navigate through 19 provinces teeming with resources and settlements. The major powers of the time, Rome and Carthage, began with confrontation, but they controlled a number of key regions and client states. Syracuse, Arevachi, and Lusitania all start from the same region, offering vastly different and more challenging challenges than playing for one of the two great empires.
Technologies focused on diplomacy:
Both Rome and Carthage have developed new branches of civilian technology focused on diplomacy. Both sides start with numerous allies and client states and can undermine the support of their opponents through diplomatic means.
12 revolutions per year:
Since the events take place in the period from 218 to 202 BC, each turn of "Hannibal at the Gate" lasts a month, and the campaign covers all four seasons, which is complemented by the effects of seasonal gameplay.
A compact multiplayer campaign focused on the game.:
For those generals looking for a faster multiplayer campaign, Hannibal at the Gates´ wider geographic reach makes 2-player co-op or competitive campaigns more focused and faster than a full-fledged Grand campaign.
New historical battles:
"Hannibal at the Gate" adds two new historical battles: the Battle of Cannae (216 BC) and the Battle of Zama (202 BC). Both battles marked the key moments of the 2nd Punic War: Cannes was the culmination of Hannibal´s invasion of Italy, and Zama was the completion of the victory of Rome and the establishment of domination over Carthage.
New game factions for Total War: ROME II
In addition to the mighty Carthage and Rome, players will be able to take part in the second Punic War as part of three new factions: Arevacs, Lusitanians and Syracuse, each of which has its own factional traits, characteristics, unique units and an initial position in the campaign. If Hannibal at the Gate belongs to one of the players, these factions can also be played in the great ROME II campaign.
Arevaki
The imperialist expansion led to the fact that Carthage and Rome found themselves on the threshold of the Arevachians, although it is Hannibal who currently borders on the militant Celtiberian tribe. At the beginning of the campaign, the Arevaks remain neutral, but they face a clear choice: unite with Hannibal and face massive retaliation from the Romans, or stay on good terms with Rome and face the inevitable wrath of Carthage. Despite their knowledge of the terrain and excellent combat skills, Arevachi cannot withstand both superpowers at the same time. They remain neutral for now, but it won´t be for long. Someone has to control the Iberian Peninsula, maybe it´s Arevachi?
Lusitanians
The Lusitanians lived in Iberia long before Carthage or Rome invaded the region. Like their distant relatives, the Suebi, they are not a single clan, but a confederation of small tribes working together for protection and mutual benefit. Fierce and agile warriors, Lusitanians are well adapted to guerrilla warfare. As Hannibal´s Carthaginian army advances through lands previously under Roman control, the Lusitanians have the opportunity to go beyond their possessions and recapture Iberia from the invaders. However, despite their prudence and even fraternization with the enemy at first, they must eventually be expelled from our land!
