On April 19, 1943, the Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence “SMERSH” was created under the People’s Commissariat of Defense of the USSR. The tasks of the structure included the fight against reconnaissance and sabotage activities of foreign, primarily fascist German, intelligence services.

Behind-the-front intelligence and counterintelligence work was carried out by operatives of the 4th department of the SMERSH State Institution. They faced the most difficult and dangerous missions: espionage, counterintelligence, sabotage, identification, kidnapping and liquidation of enemy VIPs.
