Rogue Warrior is primarily a first-person shooter with tactical elements. The player controls the Navy SEAL Richard "Demo Dick" Marcinko, also known as the Rogue Warrior.[3] Marcinko´s main goal is initially an infiltration mission to disable enemy missiles, which turns into preventing other potentially dangerous situations. To achieve this goal, Marcinko has a wide variety of weapons and explosives. Weapons include firearms, grenades and combat knives. In addition, Richard can use explosive barrels and gas canisters to destroy enemies[4][5]
When the player is in close proximity to an enemy, they can press several keys that trigger an instant kill via a finishing move. More than 25 moves are available to players. Among them are: throwing the enemy over the railing, cutting the throat, stabbing a knife in the eye, etc. At the beginning of the finishing movement, the game camera shows the finishing animation from a third person from a cinematic angle.[4] There is also a cover system akin to Gears of War and Tom Clancy´s Rainbow Six: Vegas. This allows the player to fire blindly and lean out of cover, however some cover can be destroyed. The progress of the player is recorded by a "reliable" system of checkpoints.[5]
