UNITED STATES DOLLAR
The United States dollar ($, USD) is the unit of currency of the United States of America. It is divided into 100 cents. Being taken over by the Congress of the Confederation of the United States on July 6, 1785, the U.S. dollar is the currency most used in international transactions, several countries use it as their official currency, and in many others it is the real currency. The dollar is also used as the standard unit of currency in international markets for commodities such as gold and petroleum (the latter sometimes called petrocurrency). Some non U.S. companies dealing in globalized markets list their prices in dollars. The symbol «$» is used for the U.S. dollar. The sign’s ultimate origins are not certain, though it is widely accepted that it comes from the symbol for the New Spanish peso which in turn comes from the Spanish Coat of arms. The colloquialism «buck» is often used to refer to dollars of various nations, including the U.S. dollar. This term, dating to the 18th century, may have originated with the colonial fur trade. «Greenback» is another nickname originally applied specifically to the 19th century Demand Note dollars created by Abraham Lincoln to finance the costs of the Civil War for the North.
